Ireland's Ancient East
Glendalough & Powerscourt
On the opposite side of the country, and no less interesting is the intriguingly names ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’, comprising some gems of Ireland’s past such as Glendalough with its medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. Remarkably preserved, this ‘monastic city’ includes a 30m metre high round tour, the 12th century Romasesque style St Mary’s Church and the 6th/7th century large granite cross.
Powerscourt Estate is an altogether different experience with its 47-acre formal gardens, sweeping terraces and ornamental lakes. The house itself was completed in 1741 by the 1st Vicount Powerscourt. The house contained some of the finest 18th century interiors in Ireland and in 1961 was purchased by the Slazenger family from the 9th Viscount Powerscourt.
